I'm back!!!! :D

3 min read
Well... Sorta... I'm still here I've just been super busy with the horses and haven't had much time to draw :(

I'm taking a break from the ponies today and was wondering if anyone wanted customs of anything?  Like line arts or designs or small scale commissions (no full out paintings lol).  Want to try and get $35 for a bridle for Izzy.  Prices on things will vary, just ask and I'll let you know :3

I got a new english saddle!! I need to post pics of it, its pretty nice. I got a matching set of royal blue polo wraps and quilted saddle pad, and both Izzy and Koda look super awesome in the royals.  Trying to get money to buy a matching english bridle that has royal blue accents cuz all the bridles I currently have are western ;p

SO LEMME KNOW!!!  Anyone want anything?  If someone wants to pay $35 I'll do a super nice commission ;u;

:new:  Most horses are still available!!!  Unless they have the word SOLD put in the title of their reference image they are still available!!

Yes, that's right, ALL of my HARPG horses are up for grabs, with the exception of the two Enocariari's, and 1600 AC In Shining Armor.  Except for those, they're ALL for sale.

I've finally come to the conclusion that i'd rather keep my real horse than have all these pixel horses sitting around completely unused. And honestly, I've gotten sick of HARPG. In comparison to real horses, it is extremely boring. If I feel like drawing horses i can draw the real ones I work with every day.

They do not have any set prices, but I do have rough ball-parks for what I'd like to get for them, but most prices are negotiable.  Such as: anyone wanting Piccolo 111 - Supreme blood had better be bringing USD in triple digits to the floor.  All prices are in points or USD, sorry no art sales.

:note: Comment below or note me with offers.  If multiple people want the same horse then the person willing to offer the most wins. I will NOT be accepting low-ball offers.  If a horse doesn't get a fair offer then it won't be sold, it will just continue to sit around and collect dust.

ALSO!!!  Until the horse is sold their breeding slots are up for grabs as well.

Literally.  I shit you not.  She has almost died from colic before - a little over a year now I think - and she's had two REALLY BAD colic's in just the past three weeks. And when I say bad, I mean thrashing around on the ground so much we had to beat her with lead ropes to get her back on her feet, and she wouldn't stay up for more than three minutes before she'd try to go down again.  It got to the point she was just about falling over.

:note: IF YOU HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE WITH COLICY HORSES, ANY INPUT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

A little over a year ago (before I had anything to do with Koda) she colic'd BAD.  It was so bad that the vet had come and gone 4-5 times and the last time they had called the vet out it was to put her down, because Koda could NOT stay on her feet she was in so much agony.  The vet thankfully refused to give up and kept trying one thing after another, and before the vet arrived that final time to put her down, Koda had a good thrash around on the ground, stood up, looked around, and was then totally fine.  So she survived that round.  Koda was right around a year old then. Now she's two and a half yrs old.

Since I've been involved with Koda she's colic'd quite a few times, though they were very minor: shot of banemine for pain, gatoraid, some wet grass, and she'd be back to normal in an hour or two.

Koda sporting her feather by ShapeShifter314

We've all known that since her first major colic that she'd always be highly prone to colic. The analogy that I had made to me was it's kind of like dislocating a joint: once you've dislocated it the first time, it is a lot easier for it to become dislocated again.  So since that first colic we've all been careful and watched her closely for any signs of colic.  One of the most STUPID things she does, is SHE DOESN'T DRINK ENOUGH WATER. Know how horses are supposed to drink 11-12 gallons of water a day??  Well we're lucky if Koda drinks 4 gallons in a day. We don't know why she doesn't drink, but she doesn't. And she fluctuates with her drinking as well.  Sometimes she'll drink a decent amount of water, and then she wont seem to drink anything.

Alright.  Now, before I talk about her colic Sunday night through Monday morning (September 14th and 15th) let me tell you a little bit about her diet/exercise up to that point:

 - She was getting one and a half scoops of Dumor feed, once in the morning once in the evening.
 - Two flakes of coastal hay twice a day, in a hay net.
 - We'd been putting gatoraid in her feed for many months by this point, more so when we noticed she wasn't drinking enough.
 - When we noticed she was drinking very little and it was getting really hot (starting 1-2 months before the colic) we started wetting down her feed to the point it was as runny as chicken broth. Yes, she'd slurp up every drop.  Yay for food motivated horses lol.
 - She was kept in her stall during the day and let out in a grass filled paddock at night.
 - I'd moved a salt block into her stall a week before she colic'd and she'd been licking on that quite a bit prior to the colic.
 - I'd only started working with her again a couple weeks before her colic because her feet were messed up due to an overdue farrier visit.
 - She was due to have her teeth floated (they should get done sometime next week).
 - And she was overdue for a dewormer (but I got that to her last week).

:note: When I work with her in the hot florida summer heat and humidity I'm really careful with her water intake.  I don't let her chug a lot at once, instead I offer frequent small water breaks. So she gets adequately hydrated when she gets worked.

    Her soup covered face:

My horse is disgusting... by ShapeShifter314

Colic September 14th - 15th:

That morning when after i fed her I took her empty food bucket and filled it with 4 gallons of gatoraid and let her occupy herself with that while I cleaned out our 5 stalls and the feed area.  She had access to the bucket of gatoraid for about 2 hours, and drank about 2 of the 4 gallons in it.  I groomed her down and tacked her up and lunged her in the round pen for 15-20 minutes (and that was a hard core workout).  Prior to that 20 minutes of hard working she had a 5-10 minute warm up and afterwards she got hot walked for about 30 minutes (because someone called me and I just talked on the phone while walking her in circles around the round pen.  And for the person that called 30 minutes was a short conversation lol).  So she got worked, with a good warm up and cool down.  After she was cooled down I let her get a drink and she drank about another gallon of water (not all at once) and i gave her a bath.  After her bath I let her drink again, and she drank about another 1/2 gallon of water. So we're good on the water side of things, right?

After she had her bath and water break I tied her to the poll at the pavilion to dry and she just cocked a hoof and took a nap.  She snoozed for about 20 minutes, during which time I tacked up Charming and rode him around for a little while.  Once I got Charming behaving 100% perfect, I rode over and untied Koda from the poll and pony'd her around the property for a while, mostly at a walk with a little bit of trot.  Idk why, but Koda and Charming get along really well, so it works.  At this time (around 4pm) Jenna showed up and wanted to go riding, so she tacked up and we rode down to the park and back,  and I ponied Koda along.  (The distance from the barn to the park is a mile each way).

Now, once Jenna got there and while i was waiting for her to tack and warm up her horse Tahoe I noticed that Koda was acting weird.  Normally when I'm ponying her and just standing around she's really good about standing still and quiet.  But around this time she started to fidget and dance around a bit.  What tipped it off to me as being weird is that she kept turning all the way around so that she was standing shoulder to shoulder with Charming, facing me siting in the saddle.  No matter where we were, or how short the stop was, she'd turn around like that, and it was just odd.  At the time I figured that she just knew it was feeding time and she was late for dinner (cuz Koda KNOWS when its dinner time and KNOWS when she's missing out, and food motivated horses act like little brats when you come between them and their dinner). But 30 minutes later when she was still doing the same thing I started suspecting that she was being colicy.  So yes, I kept ponying her around just to keep her moving to see if that would help her shake off what i was hoping was just another minor colic.

Well, when it was time to go for the evening I untacked Charming and walked Koda back to her stall and immediately shoved her nose in the bucket that still had 2 gallons of gatoraid.  And no sooner had I put her nose in the bucket had she flung her face up out of the bucket, speed walked out of her stall into the middle of the paddock, and thrown herself down and started thrashing around.  Not rolling, thrashing.  Of course, me being the ultra paranoid owner of a colicy horse mentally went "motherfucking shit" as I went over to haul her ass up off the ground.  But I couldn't get her up off the ground.  She just flopped around groaning at me and wouldn't get up.  The only reason I got her up then was because Jenna had come over to help and she got all in Koda's face trying to pull her up by her halter as I tried to nudge her up from behind.  Koda's never really met Jenna, so she only got up because this total stranger started yanking on her face and she felt unsafe and no longer wanted to be on the ground.

        And so it began...

We had no money to call the vet out.  None.  Not one penny.  So me and Reggie gave her a shot of banemine around 5:30-6:00pm, and walked her.  9:00pm comes around, we're still walking her and she's still trying to lay down mid step and the only way we could get her up off the ground at this point was to slap her with the lead rope.  We did it again and again and again. 10pm comes and goes, followed by 11pm.  At this point Reggie left to go get Care (his wife) and daughter (who is Rem-iniscing, and the three of them are the ones who gave me Koda and they're basically my adopted family), cuz at 11pm and Koda's still trying to thrash around, we knew we were in for one hell of a long night.  Before Reggie had come back with the crew they'd borrowed money from family to call out the vet.  So the vet was on his way.  I can't even describe to you the amount of relief I felt then.  Unless you've walked your horse, who is literally acting like they're dying, around in the rain for 4+ hours, in the dark, having NO FUCKING CLUE WHAT IS WRONG, and know that there is no possible way to call the vet, and know that there is absolutely nothing you can do to help her, then you can't possibly imagine amount of relief.  I'm glad i was sitting when Care called to tell me the vet was on his way, cuz otherwise I would likely have fallen over.

The vet showed up a little before midnight. He couldn't really pinpoint WHY she was colicing. He said her fecal matter was a bit dry, but she wasn't at all dehydrated.  She didn't have any sand, so it wasn't a sand colic but she had no gut sounds.  Her gums were super pink, indicating that she wasn't in any kind of stressing pain (because when they're in pain it stresses them out and their gums turn pale).  He took her heart rate and it wasn't that abnormal, so he looked at her and was like "WHAT are you doing mare?  There is NO reason for you to be doing this."  In the end I think the final prognosis was that she was impacted with dry fecal matter.  And because her fecal matter was dry, the vet compared it to sand paper going through her gut. So it was uncomfortable, and she was being a total drama queen.  Slight discomfort and she acts like she's dying.

So we hooked her up to an IV, then the vet pumped mineral oil and gatoraid into her stomach, and after the fist IV finished we gave her a second one. And throughout all this she had between 12 and 14 tranquilizers (we all lost count.  She was going through some every 15 minutes, and others once every 30 minutes to an hour).  Eventually she was so exhausted that the vet said she could lay down so long as she didn't thrash around; and if she started thrashing around to get her up and walk her for 15 minutes. He compared her exhaustion level to having run two marathons and then some, so she needed to sleep.  And horses only get deep REM sleep when they lay down, so she needed to lay down.  Eventually after several more tranquilizers we got her to lay down and curl up and sleep with me leaning against her shoulder so she wouldn't flop over on her side and thrash around, and Rem-iniscing sitting at her head acting as a pillow so that Koda wouldn't have to flop over on her side to rest her head.  We got her in that position around 4:00am, and we stayed that way for about an hour while Koda slept.  And idk about Rem-iniscing, but I grabbed a power nap then as well lol. Koda makes a good pillow.

After that solid hour of deep sleep, we got Koda up and walked her around and right then she looked 110% better.  Me and Rem-iniscing went home around 9am to get some sleep.  Reggie stayed, and from what I heard she rolled around once more later in the morning, and stood up for an hour, and then just curled up again and went back to sleep. And then she was fine. Monday evening we had the vet come back out and pump her stomach one more time, just to be safe.  This time she got Epsom salt water, to act as a laxative.

And that was that round of colic.

DragonicWhispers was extremely kind enough to post this fundraising journal for me shortly after I had texted her almost in hysterics Monday morning when I got home.  If you honestly think I went home and slept monday morning you're insane.  Would you be able to sleep if you knew there was a likely chance that your horse was back to thrashing around on the ground, and you're stuck at home not knowing what was going on?

Duck-footed Bunny-hopper by ShapeShifter314

We SLOWLY worked her back onto her food.  The last time she'd eaten was Sunday Morning (the 14th), and she didn't get any kind of food until Tuesday morning (the 16th).  And even then, it was a 1/4 scoop of food DROWNING in salt water and half a flake of O/A hay. We slowly built her up from that to 3/4 scoop of feed still drowning in either gatoraid or highly salted water, and a flake to a flake and a half of O/A hay. I think we were salting her food in the morning, and gatoraiding it at night.  We were also putting molasses in her water bucket at night - as per the vet's suggestion.  We also switched her from the coastal hay to the O/A hay because the coastal hay is really soft and flexible and the vet had felt fecal matter way back in her gut that was hay that hadn't been chewed up all the way.  Because coastal hay is so soft and flexible it can get wadded up in their gut if they don't chew it fully, and Koda was at the added disadvantage of also needing her teeth floated.  So she got switched to the O/A hay because its thicker and stiffer and has more substance to chew, plus its better quality hay.

So, September 23rd.  One day over exactly a week from Koda's last colic.  It was a Tuesday, and i was in class that night when I get a call from Gloria (the stable owner) saying that Koda was colicing really bad again and Reggie couldn't get to his phone.  It took me a while to get to where I could leave class and have mom run me out to the barn, and by the time I got out there Koda seemed fine.  But according to Reggie (And he had Doug and Gloria as witnesses) Koda had been thrashing around in her stall for quite some time because she was covered in black mud.  He said that she was worse this time than she was last time.  She was back to dropping down mid step to thrash on the ground and refusing to get up. When I'd gotten out to the barn Reggie had left to get Robyn and Doug was keeping an eye on Koda, whom they'd put in one of the large stalls in the barn.  As soon as she was put in that stall Doug said she acted fine.  She stopped rolling, and was more interested in picking little bits of hay off the ground. Her stomach was roaring with gut sounds this time though and her gums were still bright pink.  So we were all lost with this one.

I wasn't there for it this time, but from what i heard she was acting worse this time than she was last time.  But seriously, two MAJOR colic's just one week apart?  Really?

So we're going to be making some major changes to her diet.

My bunny-hopper by ShapeShifter314

From now on Koda will only be getting half a scoop of pellet feed, and 3 flakes of O/A hay per feeding.  We're switching her feed to Triple Crown Senior feed [Link] which is really low in starch and high in fiber, and it's designed to be easily digestible for older horses.  In doing quite a bit of research online, it was also highly recommended by many people for colicy horses because it's so easily digested.

Koda will be getting the O/A hay from now on, and her teeth should get done here in the next week or so.  Personally I would like to add alfalfa pellets to Koda's feed as well, because it will add even more fiber.  The whole thing with cutting her back to only half a scoop of food is that the vet says she needs to basically 100% grass fed.  Horses are not designed to eat grain, and it sits like sand in their stomachs.  And for some reason, Koda's just really sensitive to such things, more so than other horses. But before we add the alfalfa pellets to her feed Reggie wants to ask the vet about it, because none of us or anyone we know really knows what we're doing in this special case, so we're stuck relying on what the vet says.

We still drown her food in salt water, and we've noticed that the more salt we give her the more water she drinks, plus she's got access to a big salt block almost 24/7 and she still licks on that quite a bit in addition to the salt water in her feed.

Because we're cutting her feed intake literally by 2/3rds of what it was, I'm highly concerned about her dropping weight.  In the last three weeks because of the colic episodes and while we're in the process of switching feeding routines she's already dropping weight like a rock.  When i was researching ways to put weight on horses for Charming (cuz he keeps dropping weight for some reason) I found that adding oil to their food helps give them extra calories which gives them weight.  So I talked to DragonicWhispers about what kind of oil would be good to put in Koda's feed she said Cocosoya, which is soybean and coconut oil, and Reggie said we'd try that.  The oil will not only help her keep weight, but also help flush the food through her gut.  Like mineral oil.

We will be flushing her system with Metamucil every few weeks, to flush out any sand she might get in her system as well.

        So...
  • - Triple Crown Senior Feed
  • - Possibly alfalfa pellets
  • - O&A Hay
  • - Oil/salt/water in her feed
  • - Flushing her system with Metamucil
  • - Bribing her to drink via Gatoraid and Molasses
  • - Working with her consistently to keep her active

And that's all we've got.  Other than that, we're at a loss for what to do ._.

Thoughts about a possible genetic disorder were passed around, as well as the idea that since Koda's mother was severely malnourished during pregnancy that that might have caused something abnormal in Koda's early development.
